Complete Wii Modding Guide
Wilbrand → HBC → BootMii → Priiloader → cIOS → USB Loader

This guide walks you through the entire Wii softmod process step by step. It includes a full detailed guide plus a condensed cheat sheet for advanced users. It works on any Wii on System Menu 4.3 or lower (the Wilbrand exploit covers all regions).

Back Up Your NAND

Modding always carries some risk. Always back up your NAND before major changes, and keep nand.bin + keys.bin safe on both your PC and a USB/cloud copy. With a BootMii boot2 backup you can recover from almost any brick.

Part 1 — Wilbrand Web Exploit

  1. On the Wii: Settings → top-right — note the system version and region letter.
  2. On the Wii: Internet → Console Info — note the MAC address.
  3. On your PC: visit wilbrand.donut.eu.org. Enter version, region, and MAC. Check "Bundle the HackMii Installer" and download the ZIP.
  4. Extract and copy private + boot.elf to the SD card root.
  5. Insert the SD → Wii → Message Board → open the green bomb letter.
Note

If the green bomb letter is missing: check ±1 day on the message board, verify the SD card is FAT32, make sure the card's lock switch is unlocked, or retry the exploit generation.

Part 2 — Install Homebrew Channel & BootMii

  • HackMii: wait for "Press 1 to continue" → press 1.
  • Install Homebrew Channel → Yes → Continue.
  • Install BootMii (boot2 if available, otherwise IOS).
  • Exit to the Homebrew Channel.
Tip

Only very early Wii consoles support BootMii as boot2 — this is the gold-standard, brick-proof install. If your Wii only offers "BootMii as IOS", that's normal for later consoles; Priiloader (Part 5) becomes your main brick protection.

Part 3 — BootMii NAND Backup

  • Ensure the SD card has 1 GB+ free.
  • Launch BootMii via boot2 autoboot, or HBC → HOME → BootMii.
  • Navigate with POWER/RESET or a GameCube controller.
  • Select the gear icon → NAND Backup.
  • Copy nand.bin + keys.bin to your PC/USB.
Note

Bad blocks are normal; BootMii verifies the backup automatically.

Part 4 — BootMii Autoboot (boot2 only)

Open SD:/bootmii/bootmii.ini and set:

AUTOBOOT=SYSMENU
BOOTDELAY=1

Now the Wii boots directly into the System Menu.

Part 5 — Install Priiloader

  1. Download PriiloaderSD:/apps/priiloader/.
  2. Run it via HBC → hold B + + to install.
  3. Hold RESET on boot to reach the Priiloader menu.
  4. Enable System Menu Hacks:
    • Block Disc Updates
    • Block Online Updates
    • (Optional) Region-Free Everything

Part 6 — Install cIOS (d2x v11 beta3)

Run the d2x cIOS Installer and do the following installs:

SlotBasecIOSRevision
24838d2x-v11-beta365535
24956d2x-v11-beta365535
25057d2x-v11-beta365535
25158d2x-v11-beta365535
Note

Install each one separately (slot → base → version → install).

Part 7 — Install WADs / Homebrew with YAWM

  • Download YAWM ModMii Edition.
  • Extract → SD:/apps/yawmME/.
  • Put WADs into SD:/wad/ (e.g. a USB Loader GX forwarder).
  • Launch YAWM → install.

Part 8 — USB Game Loading (FAT32)

  • Format the USB drive as FAT32.
  • On PC: use Wii Backup Manager to transfer games to /wbfs/.
  • On Wii: use CleanRip to dump your own discs to USB.
Tip

Use a rear USB port (the top one on a horizontally-placed Wii) for best loader compatibility. If a game won't boot, switch the loader's IOS between 249 and 250, and prefer USB drives over SD for larger libraries.
